Southfield neuroma

Southfield neuroma is one condition that our doctors see often at our office. A neuroma is a nerve irritation of the foot that involves an enlarged or swollen segment of the nerve itself. The swollen segment can grow to the size of a grape and may become quite painful when pressed or walked upon. Common symptoms of a neuroma include pain, which can be quite severe, burning, tingling and numbness often these symptoms radiate to the two adjacent toes. Neuromas often occur between the third and fourth toe as well as radiate to the metatarsal fat pad. Neuromas can occur in several other places along the toes and bottom of the foot. Trauma or injury to the foot is believed to be the cause of most neuromas, with the trauma often occurring long before the pain of the neuroma begins to be felt.

Southfield neuromas are treated in several different ways by our doctors; conservative treatments include the use of more comfortable shoes and shoe modifications and padding. Physical therapy can also be useful in treating neuromas as is the injection of anti-inflammatory drugs into the localized area. Surgical treatments are used when more conservative treatments fail to bring the patient relief and are aimed at removing the irritated section of the nerve. If you believe that you suffer from neuromas or any other foot or ankle problem call our office for an appointment.
